ONGOING CASE STUDY OF AMSOIL PRODUCTS IN A BMW

The car being used in this case study is my own 1997 BMW 328i.  It is completely stock with no modifications.  The vehicle was purchased in November 2006.  The previous owner had regular scheduled maintenance done at the BMW dealership and a synthetic oil change with Mobil1 was performed right before I purchased it.

I decided to keep that oil throughout the winter so that I could run some fuel economy tests and get a good comparison between the two oils.

I Used Amsoil Engine Flush to help to loosen up any sludge deposits or varnish.  Drained oil and installed Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30.  Also used the newly formulated Performance Improver fuel additive on my next tank of gas.

The oil that came out was very thick and black.  It pours very slowly as compared to new oil.  Definitely past its service life, I should have changed the oil sooner.  At four months and just over 7000km, I was right around the recommended change but clearly the oil was not lasting that long.

Once the Amsoil oil was in, the difference was immediately noticeable.  Amsoil is the only oil I have ever used that you can actually feel a difference.  Right away, I got:

  • Quicker and easier starts, especially noticeable on cold mornings

  • Smoother and quieter idling

  • Smoother and quieter under acceleration and at highway speeds

  • Improved fuel economy

In a couple of weeks, the transmission fluid and differential fluid with both be changed to Amsoil products.  An oil analysis will be performed every 10,000 km to monitor the condition of the oil and determine actual service life for this vehicle.

I drive, on average, 20,0000 km in a year, I will have saved 79.6L of fuel.  That's over one full tank.  With gas prices currently fluctuating between $1.00 and $1.10 per litre, I'm keeping between $79.60 and $87.55 in my wallet.

Amsoil ATF was installed into my manual transmission.  It was only a drain and fill, not a complete flush and fill.  Additionally, some Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 was installed in the differential.

Now my fuel economy has increased even further due to the oil and fluids I am using alone.  Driving habits and distances remain consistent over the whole test.

Using the same estimate of 20,000 km per year I am now saving almost 150L of fuel.  That's three fill ups at the gas station and a savings of roughly $150.  Essentially, this makes my oil and other fluids FREE for the year!  Not only do I get free fluids, but I am always benefiting from the fact that Amsoil protects my engine and other components better than any other major brand oil out there.

At almost 10,000 km (6,000 miles), it is time for an oil analysis to determine the condition of the oil and to find out if it is suitable for continued use.

The spectrochemical analysis shows that the Amsoil TSO Series 2000 oil is fit for continued use after five months and 9,500 km of service.  Technical definition of what oil analysis values mean.
